Commissioned by the 2009 Xavier University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Matthew Westgate, Conductor
In 2008 Matthew Westgate asked me to write a piece for the Xavier University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Not having a clue with what to do with all this instrumental color, I turned to pictures of neon signs and art. I was interested in a four-story light installation in front of the District 7 Caltrans building in downtown Los Angeles that was created by Keith Sonnier. The name of the structure, entitled Motordom, consists of neon and argon lines in red and blue that light up at sporadic times. I wrote this piece taking inspiration from this installation.
